Welcome to Bank of Scotland (Glasgow) Curling Club
Welcome to Bank of Scotland (Glasgow) Curling Club website. We are a club of bankers and retired bankers who curl at Braehead, Glasgow. We are always looking for new members, so if you work or have previously worked for Bank of Scotland, Halifax or Lloyds Bank then please consider joining us.
A Brief History
Our Club was founded and admitted to the Royal Caledonian Curling Club in 1959.
Records from the very early days, unfortunately, are not to be found but our oldest and most prestigious trophy, the John R. MacFarlane Trophy, has been played for since season 1962/63. Other events of more recent vintage are: the Craig Thompson Trophy (1997/98), donated by staff at The Cross Branch, Paisley in memory of a popular player who died tragically young, the Pairs Shield (1981/82) and the Copeland Rosebowl (1984/85) played for by the retired members of our Club.
Since our founding we have had our home ice at no fewer than four ice rinks – Crossmyloof (now a supermarket), Summit Centre (now a fitness club), The Lagoon Centre, Paisley (no longer used for curling) and, since the millennium, Braehead on the banks of the Clyde.
We have enjoyed testing our skills in a number of games against other clubs such as our old friends from Bank of Scotland (Edinburgh) whom we meet annually, likewise the Bank Club in Perth. The Bank Championships at Perth Ice Rink in January are an event to look forward to, as is the Bonspiel at the same venue in November. In common with so many other clubs we have lost a few of our players over the years without being able to replace them in the same numbers and this makes for limited participation in Glasgow Province events but we shall continue to support these as long as possible.
Something which is as true now as it no doubt was in 1959 is that we enjoy our curling and the camaraderie both on and off the ice.
